No matter what the season, it seems like everyone is always looking for an easy and convenient way to achieve a sun-kissed glow. If you’re considering giving spray tanning a try, read on for all the basics you need to know before your first appointment. From choosing the right shade to avoiding streaks, we’ve got you covered!

What Is Spray Tanning?

The basics of spray tanning are relatively simple. It is the process of an individual using a special apparatus to spray one’s body with a solution that tints the skin. The end result is a bronze, sunless glow that will last for several days – or even longer depending on your specific needs/tanning schedule.

The spray tan procedure usually takes about 20 minutes. It’s a perfect solution for those who don’t love the idea of laying out in the hot sun or going to a tanning salon, not to mention, it’s such an easy way to look like you spent hours at the beach without actually having done so.

There are many types of solutions – and it’s important for you to choose one that is right for your own individual needs. Some people like a more prominent color whereas others prefer something lighter (or even no color at all). If this is your first time ever being spray-tanned, it may be useful to start off with a light shade just so that you have an understanding of how things work. In general, most people seem to prefer darker shades.

Always remember that your spray tan solution will not be apparent immediately after you’ve received it. It takes time for the color to settle in – usually about 8 hours or so. After this period of time, you can go on with your normal daily routine while still enjoying the sunless look. This is why most people schedule their treatments around nightfall so they can sleep in them and wake up looking nice and bronzed without having to worry about how long it’s actually been!

How Do I Prepare Myself?

If you have never been spray-tanned before, it’s best to start off with a light coat so that you can get used to the sensation and develop a base tan. Also, it’s best not to shave or wax your legs for 24 hours before spray tanning- this will prevent any unnecessary potential staining of the skin.

You should prepare yourself by exfoliating dead skin cells using a sugar scrub, which is a great way to soften up dry areas of your body. It is also recommendable that you apply a high SPF sun lotion onto your skin before going into the booth so that you don’t have any unwanted dark spots from overexposure to the sun.

How Long Does It Last?

Depending on your skin type, how often you exfoliate, and what the solution is composed of, your spray tan can usually last between 5 – 10 days.  If you want to keep the tint for longer than that it’s recommended that you reapply or get a professional treatment done at least once every month.  A good self-tanning lotion and gradual tanning products such as Jergens Natural Glow Express Body Moisturizer can take up to 2 – 3 days to achieve the same color results as a new spray tan.

If you want you can always touch up your spray tan with some self-tanner if needed after about 7 days however, most clients find their spray tan lasts around 10-14 days.

What Are The Benefits Of Spray Tanning?

There are many benefits to spray tanning which is why this method has become so popular.  People like it because it is natural-looking and affordable.  Also, the outcome of the tan looks great in any type of clothing (even white) without having to worry about staining or smearing.

How Does Spray Tanning Work?

The technician will put on gloves and an apron before applying the solution with a mitt in circular motions around the body, focusing more on problem areas such as knees, ankles, elbows, and wrists.  Airbrush machines shoot out a finely milled mist that leaves behind a streak-free finish when applied correctly.  Afterward, you can shower off the excess color guide solution or wait a few hours before rinsing.  Make sure to go over problem areas again with the mitt to avoid any missed spots.

How Do I Care For A Spray Tan?

Did you get a spray tan?  Now, what do you do?  That is the million-dollar question! So, here are a few basic guidelines to keep in mind when it comes to maintaining your spray tan:

  • Keep Your Skin Moisturized

Since most spray tans have either some level of or an extremely high amount of DHA in them, which will dry out the exterior of your skin without proper hydration, be sure to moisturize at least once per day.  Keep in mind that this step is not optional and is one of the most important things you can do to prolong the life of your tan.

  • Shower With Cool Water Every Time You Shower

Hot water will activate the DHA and can cause staining of your skin.  Some salons recommend not showering for 8 hours, but this isn’t always possible or convenient to leave it that long.

  • Don’t Scratch Or Pick At Your Spray Tan

You may want to give yourself a quick once over with a loofah to uncover any dry patches you missed during the application, but by no means should you be scratching down the front side of your body! If unsure if something is dry or just doesn’t feel right, apply another thin coat of moisturizer to that area, wait 10 minutes then try again.

  • Keep All Clothing Loose And Soft

The fewer rubs and tugs on a freshly applied spray tan, the better! So, when out and about, try wearing loose-fitting clothes.  And if you need to take your clothes off, be sure not to tug at them!
