Can I Give Myself A Back Facial At Home?

While we’re all stuck indoors (or should be) for the foreseeable future, treating yourself to a well-deserved facial may seem like a distant, unimaginable luxury — but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t continue to care for your skin. On the contrary, as the outside world continues to elicit constant feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty, it’s more important than ever to take care of your own mental health, and one of the best ways to do so is by incorporating a spa-like atmosphere into your very own bathroom.

Sure, you won’t be able to perfectly replicate your favorite facialist’s perfectly positioned finger strokes or turn your bathroom into a temporary oasis of aromatherapy with sounds of a distant seashore. However, according to some of the top aestheticians, you can actually make your skin smoother and softer at home by recreating a nearly professional experience.

That doesn’t mean you have to dig through your medicine cabinet for the slew of equipment and products that have been gathering dust for months. Instead, make yourself a refreshing glass of cucumber water and indulge in some serious self-pampering with these expert-approved techniques.

Begin By Cleansing Twice.

The first step in any sort of facial should always be to cleanse to prepare the skin and “start with a clear canvas.”

Georgia Louise, an esthetician, suggests starting an at-home facial with a double cleanse. Louise recommends starting with an oil-based cleanser to melt away makeup and remove undesirable, dead skin cells while maintaining the lipid barrier.

Next, decide if you want to use a foam or cream cleanser. Creams are more mild,so they’re technically [better] for someone with sensitive skin. Typically, foam [cleansers] keep pores cleaner.

Using a warm washcloth, remove the oil-based cleanser and replace it with a cream or gel cleanser. Focus on oily and congested areas, and massage well into all the nooks and crannies of the skin.

Exfoliate In The Second Step.

After cleansing, exfoliate, or slough off the top layer of skin cells and excess oils, to ensure that the ingredients penetrate and the next processes are as effective as possible, according to Vargas. You can use either a physical or a chemical exfoliation, depending on your skin type.

Moisturize And Massage Your Skin.

After removing your preferred face mask, apply your preferred serums and moisturizer – the overarching goal being hydration.

Mask.

Choose your face mask based on the troubles you’re having with your skin right now. Choose a clay-based or vitamin C-containing product if your skin is oily and prone to breakouts. If your skin feels parched or dry, use a hydrating face mask with components like hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5.

Using a facial mask made with peptides and antioxidants to smooth out wrinkles is recommended. The basic line with face masks is that they should be used to cure any problem you have.

For immediate brightness, take an egg and a tbsp of plain Greek yogurt. Whip up the egg white until foamy, then add yogurt. Leave the combination on for 15 minutes to reveal the look of tighter pores (thanks to the albumen in egg whites) and a brighter complexion (from the lactic acid in yogurt).

And if hydration is your objective, a half-cup plain Greek yogurt blended with half an avocado and a quarter cup honey will do wonders.

Apply Steam.

Fill a bowl [with] hot water and position your face over the bowl with a towel over your head to let your skin ‘open up’ while masking, emphasizing that you don’t need fancy at-home equipment to gain the advantages of steaming. A good old-fashioned bowl of orange slices will do an excellent job of softening the skin and opening the pores.
