If you’re like most people, you probably think of spray tanning as a way to get a quick sun-kissed glow without having to actually go outside and lay in the sun. But did you know that spray tanning can do more than just give you a pretty bronze hue? In fact, there are a few things about spray tanning that might surprise you. Keep reading to learn five secrets about spray tanning that you probably didn’t know!

1. Shave Early

Shaving too close to spray tanning can cause problems with the tan. The user should shave at least 24 hours before getting sprayed, as shaving after this time will not affect the results.

Hair removal creams are also a good option for removing hair before spray tanning, but they can take longer to work than shaving does.

Be sure to be thorough when using any cream product in preparation for spray tanning, since these products can leave behind residue that makes it hard for self-tanners to adhere properly.

A good idea would be to shave the night before. This will avoid any of the “burning” sensations that you get when shaving right before spray tanning. You should always exfoliate beforehand because it helps the tan stick to your body and leaves you with a smooth bronzed look after tanning!

2. The Best Way To Avoid Staining Clothes Is By Wearing Old Clothes

The most efficient way of preventing clothing from staining during or after an application is by wearing white garments throughout the application process. White garments are the easiest to clean. However, the wearer should avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing in order to prevent marking.

Another tip is to wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting stained or marked for your spray tanning session. You can also bring an extra set of clothes just in case you get body paint on them during the spray tan process. Make sure all of your items are 100% cotton because it absorbs the dye better than most fabrics do.

3. Moisturizer Is Your Best Friend

When you tan, the color is formed through the Tyrosine molecules in your skin. Moisturizer helps to trap these Tyrosine molecules so that they continue to give you a glowing tan for days after application!

We’ve all been taught that moisturizing is key. While it’s true that after a spray tan you will want to hydrate your skin, there’s another reason why we’re constantly spraying our skin with this solution; it blocks the transfer of the color from the skin and into your clothing. It also acts as an invisible barrier between your clothes and your freshly sprayed skin: protecting them from staining when you sweat or when your clothes rub against your body in certain places.

4. The Chemical Reaction During Spray Tanning Is Not A Cause For Concern

The solution used for spray tanning is a chemical called dihydroxyacetone (DHA), and it reacts with the amino acids in the dead layer of skin cells to create a temporary tan.

You are not in any harmful danger during the spray tanning process, but you should still take precautions. The machine sprays out a fine mist containing dihydroxyacetone (DHA) mixed with other chemicals that are used to break down the DHA’s crystals into smaller components. This allows it to penetrate the skin evenly. Although this chemical reaction is safe, make sure to avoid contact with your eyes or scalp for at least 15 minutes after spray tanning because DHA can discolor hair and irritate these areas of sensitive skin.

Spray tanning works with either an organic or self-tanner lotion. However, many individuals use both for a darker color. Organic lotions offer no scent after application, whereas self-tanner lotions do have a lingering chemical scent after application which may be undesirable for some customers. For those who don’t like the idea of dousing their body in chemicals, there’s always the option of spraying tans without any chemical additives (just tan solution). This eliminates the risk of your spray tan smelling like chemicals or having that self-tanner scent later.

5. Spray Tans Are Customizable

Most salons will have a spray tan solution that is customized for each client based on their skin type, desired level of darkness, and overall goals. Some spas have an even wider variety so if you are looking to get something unique done be sure to research different places in your area.

Many people get concerned that they will end up looking like an orange Cheeto due to misapplication. With the revolutionary spray technology, you are able to choose how dark of a tan you want depending on how many coats you apply. You also have the ability to choose where you want your tan and where you don’t.

If there’s one area in particular that has always been difficult for you when applying self-tanner, be sure to point it out at the time of booking so your technician can be prepared with special placement products in order to avoid any embarrassing mishaps!
