The Acalanes Center for Independent Study (ACIS) located in Walnut Creek, is the newest school in the Acalanes Union High School District (District). In 2004, Del Oro High School, the continuation high school of the District, and its independent study program were split into separate classes. With the closing of Del Oro High School, ACIS became the only alternative high school in 2010-11.

ACIS serves students living in the Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda and Walnut Creek suburban residential communities who attend one of the four comprehensive high schools in the District: Acalanes, Campolindo, Las Lomas and Miramonte. Parents in these areas are predominantly involved in skilled careers, have high aspirations for their schools, are active participants in the education of their students, and are supportive of the District’s financial support. In 2010, based on API ratings, the Acalanes Union High School District ranked number one among high school districts in California.

For all students, ACIS offers a college preparatory programme. ACIS classes fulfill the “a-g” criteria of the University of California. For students, restricted elective classes are given and students can enroll in adult education, ROP, or simultaneously enroll in community college classes.

ACIS is a fully accredited high school until June 30, 2023, by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
