Orinda is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 17,643 at the 2010 census and 19,514 at the next census. Orinda is located in four Mexican land grants: Rancho Laguna de los Palos Colorados, Rancho Acalanes, Rancho El Sobrante, and Rancho Boca de La Canada del Pinole. The area that is now Orinda was originally rural.
The City of Orinda was incorporated in 1985. Its first mayor was Ruth Asawa, a prolific Japanese American artist who is widely known for creating large public sculptures using crocheted wire and hanging them from the ceiling. Asawa’s massive outdoor sculpture entitled “Fountain of Life” is located in the center of downtown Orinda.
